RESEARCH GRANTS:

2003, The Rhode Island Medical Foundation
Role: Principle Investigator
"Characterization of the Inflammatory Response to Cardiopulmonary Bypass in the Neonate: Effects on Cytokine and Adhesion Molecule Expression"

2004-2006, Victor H Moore Research Grant
"Expression of CD 163 in Hypoxic Neonatal Swine undergoing Cardiopulmonary Bypass"

RESEARCH ACTIVITY:

1) Monocyte/macrophage function in chronically hypoxic rat lungs

Monocytes have been shown to have a roll in pulmonary artery adventitial thickening in chronically hypoxic animals. We are investigating the signaling mechanism involved trafficking monocytes to these specific sites.

2) Characterization of CD163 expression in children undergoing correction of congenital defects of the heart

Children undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass may have an severe inflammatory response. This response is multifold, but overwhelming hemolysis may have a significant role. We are investigating a macrophage surface receptor, CD163, for it roll in this response.
