Dr. Kandaswamy is a co-investigator on this project.  In light of the promising results obtained after intraportal transplantation of porcine islets in nonhuman primates we will examine the efficacy of our base immunosuppressive protocol in combination with other immunotherapeutics tested for their ability to substitute for á–CD154.  If possible, the use of investigational drugs will be avoided.  This approach is expected to result in the development of a clinically applicable regimen for submission to the FDA.
