The Minimally Invasive Surgery/Bariatric fellowship is a one to two year fellowship with a heavy emphasis on all aspects of bariatric surgery. The fellow is responsible for running this service in conjunction with a PG-2 and a PGY-1 level resident. Up to two fellows will be accepted per year; however, there may be an additional fellow present if there is an overlap of their period of training.

We are a busy surgical service performing over 600 complex bariatric surgical procedures per year. These procedures include laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery, laparoscopic adjustable banding, laparoscopic revisional surgery including takedown of previous bariatric procedures, as well as conversions from anti-reflux procedures. Furthermore, we perform a number of complex open procedures including the duodenal switch and various types of revisional procedures. In addition, we perform a variety of laparoscopic advanced procedures including adrenalectomies, splenectomies, and a significant number of complex laparoscopic ventral hernia repairs. During the course of the year, we expect that the fellow will become quite comfortable with upper endoscopy, both diagnostic and therapeutic. It is our goal that the fellow becomes proficient in methods of open bariatric surgery, as well as laparoscopic bariatric surgery, and would be fully prepared to join or begin a program of their own following this training period.

Furthermore, emphasis is placed on the perioperative care of the obese patient including workup for surgery and post-operative follow-up. There will be ample clinic opportunities to help recognize a routine post-operative course and to help identify complications such as strictures, marginal ulcers, internal hernias, incisional hernias, etc.

Applications are now being accepted for a one-year advanced training position in Minimally Invasive General & Bariatric Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School.  Applicants must be board eligible, certified, or equivalent in general surgery. These positions offer specialty training in the rapidly growing specialty of bariatric surgery and minimally invasive surgery in one of the nation's largest bariatric programs based at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.  This position will begin in the summer 2007.
