Quality and Outcomes
Quality of care is dependent upon several factors, but is measured by outcome criteria. Most procedures in vascular surgery are preventative in nature and therefore the operation must improve upon the natural history of the disease process. To justify an operation: 1) Carotoid endarterectomy performed for stroke must have a very low complication rate (stroke or death rate), 2) Aortic aneurysm repair must prolong the life of a patient, and 3) Lower extremity bypass for gangrene, a non-healing wound, or claudication, must have low graft failure and limb loss rates. The vascular surgeons in the Vascular Surgery Section have recorded the outcomes of all procedures performed over the last 7 years and have this data readily available for review.
