What happens after the donor evaluation?

Once the donor's evaluation is complete, all of the information will be carefully reviewed by the transplant team in order to make a final decision regarding that donor's suitability. Once the decision is made to accept a donor, a tentative transplant date can be chosen. We will then arrange for the donor to donate 2 units of blood before the surgery. Thus, if the donor requires a transfusion during the surgery, his or her own blood can be used. This process of "banking" one's own blood generally takes 2 to 3 weeks.
