PGY-1 Resident Director
Daniel
Saltzman, M.D., Ph.D. is an assistant professor of Surgery and Pediatrics
at the University of Minnesota. A graduate of the University of Minnesota School
of Medicine, Dr. Saltzman completed his general surgery residency at the University
of Minnesota from 1991-1998. He completed fellowships in surgical infectious disease
at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics, and in pediatric surgery
at Arkansas Children's Hospital. He also earned a PhD. in surgical sciences from
the University of Minnesota. During his residency and fellowship, Dr.
Saltzman received several awards including "Surgical Resident Teacher of the Year"
the first-ever recipient of this award at the intern level. He went on to win
this award again in 1998 when he also was presented with the "Cassius MC Ellis
Award for Resident Teaching." In addition, he also received special recognition
from Arkansas Children's Hospital for his work in pediatric trauma and was awarded
the "Best Presentation Fellow's Day 1999 Arkansas Children's Hospital." An accomplished
academician, Dr. Saltzman completed a PhD in Surgical Sciences in 1997, earning
a "National Research Service Award" from the National Institutes of Health and
grant awards from the Elsa U Pardee Foundation for Cancer Research and Minnesota
Medical Foundation. His bibliography is notable with 30 publications, 3 book chapters
and 5 handbooks, as well as abstracts and presentations at national meetings.
Dr. Saltzman has established a practice in pediatric general surgery
with specializations in the areas of pediatric laparoscopic surgery, thoracoscopic
surgery and neonatal surgery. He is board certified in General Surgery and Pediatric
Surgery and is an associate fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His research
interests include children's cancer and resectable hepatic metastases.
