The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery of the Department of Surgery, University of Minnesota School of Medicine, offers five one-year colon and rectal surgical resident training positions each year. The Residency Training Program Director is Ann C. Lowry, M.D., Adjunct Professor of Surgery.
Program Features
Operative Caseload
- 150-200 major colon resections
- 200 anorectal procedures
Colonoscopy
- 125-150 colonoscopies
- 50 polypectomies
Anorectal Physiology Laboratory
Each year 450 patients are evaluated in the ARP Lab. All patient interviews and physiology testing is conducted by the resident during dedicated lab time.
Biofeedback
The opportunity to learn biofeedback techniques is provided under the direction of Dr. Ann Lowry and Linda Jensen.
Endorectal Ultrasound
Each year 360 endorectal ultrasound examinations are performed either for staging of rectal cancer or evaluation of incontinence and other anorectal disorders. The program is structured so that residents have direct experience performing this procedure and interpreting the images.
Data Retrieval System
Computerized medical records and billing simplifies patient identification and data retrieval for study purposes.
Residency Program Office
Individual work stations for residents are provided with a self-contained library and audio-visual facility as well as computer access and secreterial support.

Clinical Research
Each resident is expected to complete one retrospective review and one short-term prospective study during the year for submission to the annual meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons for presentation and/or publication. Supervision and direction will be provided at the bimonthly research meetings. There will be opportunities to co-author one or more book chapters with Division faculty.

Clinical Rotations
Each resident will spend two six-week periods on each of the following rotations:
University of Minnesota Medical Center
- Focuses on colonoscopy, anorectal physiology/ultrasound, surgery, and preoperative/postoperative care
VA Medical Center/Fairview Southdale Hospital
- Focuses on colonoscopy, surgery, and preoperative/postoperative care
Minneapolis Teaching Hospitals
- Located at Abbott Northwestern Hospital: focuses on surgical caseload and postoperative care
St. Paul Teaching Hospitals
- Located at United Hospital: focuses on surgical caseload, private office experience, biofeedback, and postoperative care

Research Year
A one-year research position is offered by the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery under the direction of Dr. Robert D. Madoff.
A formal research meeting attended by Division faculty and residents is held bimonthly to supervise and coordinate research plans and direction.
Applicants who are interested in this position should specify their interest on the application form. The research resident is selected prior to the National Resident Matching Program.
