Colon and Rectal Surgery Faculty

The 20 physician members of the Division's faculty are Board-certified or Board-eligible colon and rectal surgeons. Three hold tenure or tenure-track positions and are members of the University of Minnesota Physicians, and 13 hold adjunct faculty appointments in the Medical School and are members of Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates. Two certified research nurses assist faculty members to conduct high-quality clinical research, and one nurse patient coordinator facilitates multi-disciplinary care at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.

The Division's faculty offer patients and referring physicians special expertise in all aspects of the care of patients with colorectal diseases and disorders. This includes cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticular disease, rectal prolapse, volvulus, anal incontinence, hemorrhoids, infections, fistulas, fissures, pilonidal disease, hereditary diseases of the colorectum and functional disorders of the lower gastrointestinal tract. A full range of diagnostic testing services is available including colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy, sophisticated pelvic floor functional tests, endorectal ultrasonography and genetic counseling and testing. Surgical expertise spans the spectrum of colorectal surgical techniques including reconstructive surgery such as anal sphincter repair and ileal pouch surgery for colitis, complex operations for advanced or recurrent cancer, and specialized techniques of minimally invasive surgery including laparoscopic bowel resections and endoanal excision of tumors. The Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery leads clinical trials and has active basic, translational and clinical research programs. As a result, patients may have access to experimental procedures not available at most institutions.
