General and Transplant Surgery
Dr. Raja Kandaswamy is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Transplantation at the University of Minnesota and has held this position for the last five years. After receiving his medical degree from Kilpauk Medical College in Madras, he completed his residency in General Surgery at Howard University Hospital and his Fellowship in Transplant Surgery at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Kandaswamy has published over 30 articles, has over 150 accepted abstracts at national and international transplant meetings, has written 4 book chapters, and has been invited to speak at conferences nationally and internationally. He is a reviewer for both the American Journal of Kidney Diseases and Clinical Transplantation.
Dr. Kandaswamy's clinical specialty area includes multi-organ abdominal transplants including kidney, liver, pancreas, islets, and intestinal transplantation. In addition, he has spearheaded the effort to develop and implement the laparoscopic donor nephrectomy operation at the University of Minnesota.
His area of research interest is in pancreas and islet transplants. He is the Principal Investigator for two major studies in pancreas transplantation involving steroid avoidance/withdrawal. He is a co-investigator in the human alloislet trials at the University of Minnesota with Dr. Bernhard Hering.
Dr. Kandaswamy's future areas of research interest include developing a pancreas preservation protocol for maximizing islet yield, calcineurin and steroid free protocol for simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants, and studying novel induction protocols for solitary pancreas transplants. He is also looking into the effect of cytokine gene polymorphisms on rejection and survival in pancreas transplants.
