Resident Resource Room

In addition to the main Biomedical Library in Diehl Hall, the Department of Surgery runs its own Resident Resource Room. This room provides access to surgical textbooks, computers, and a quiet atmosphere for entering data information, operative logs or reading.

Surgery Photographer

The Department of Surgery photographer, Gerald G. (Jerry) Vincent, provides prints and videos suitable for use in presentation or publication—using state-of-the-art recording equipment—for any faculty member or resident who asks for help.

Continuing Medical Education Course

Each June, the Department of Surgery presents its Annual Continuing Education Course, under the direction of Dr. John S. Najarian, Clinical Professor. The 73rd Annual Surgery Course was held June 10-13, 2009, titled "Advances in Gastrointestinal and GI Laparoscopic Surgery."

The 77th E. Starr Judd Lecture was delivered by Nathaniel J. Soper, M.D., Loyal and Edith Davis Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery, Northwestern University Feinberg School of
Medicine.  His lecture title was, "Minimally Invasive GI Surgery:  Past, Present, and Future," which was scheduled for the first day of the course.

Designed primarily for surgeons in the region, the four-day course is open to current residents free of charge. More than 600 people usually attend.

Colon and Rectal Surgery Course

Each fall, the Department of Surgery Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery presents a four-day course entitled "Principles in Colon and Rectal Surgery." Two named lectures are given in memory of William C. Bernstein and Howard M. Frykman. Open to current residents free of charge, the course typically attracts about 250 registrants.
